National Daylight Appreciation Day

National Daylight Appreciation Day Celebrates Benefits of Sunlight on Longest Day of the Year: June 21

June 21st

Benefits of daylight include higher performance for students

Who doesn’t love bright sunny rooms in their home? Well, what about classrooms, where kids spend so many hours of their lives? Studies show (Heshong Mahone) that students in classrooms with daylight actually perform better on tests and have higher attendance rates.

National Daylight Appreciation Day (June 21, 2013) was created as a way to increase awareness about the benefits of incorporating daylight in all aspects of our lives. Since daylight is free and energy efficient (no electric lights needed), there is a movement afoot to incorporate it everywhere from homes and offices to colleges, universities and schools.

For example:

  • Several studies have shown that natural daylighting in schools increases student performance. One study, completed for the California Energy Commission, found that among 12 models considered, there was on average a 21% improvement in student learning rates from those in classrooms with the least amount of daylight compared to those with the most. (June 2009 – “ Boulder School Installs Daylighting Device” http://colorado.construction.com)
  • Natural light contributes to increased concentration among occupants and positively affects their emotional well-being and overall mood. Studies reveal that students in rooms lit by an increased amount of daylight consistently progress 20 percent faster in math and 26 percent faster in reading. (May 2010 – “Untangling Daylighting and Mesh” http://www.edcmag.com)

Additionally, here are five of the many benefits of daylight:

Reduce stress and anxiety: You can reduce your stress level with the help of proper exposure to sunlight. Taking some time to enjoy the sun can help you sleep better as you decrease your stress level. If you are feeling anxious, sensible sun exposure on a regular basis can help soothe you. Sunlight is one of the natural remedies to anxiety.

Show your plants some love: Plants appreciate natural light, just like we do, and will flourish when you incorporate it into your home.

Fight depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): There is evidence that sunlight is a natural way to improve your mood. If you suffer from depression, adding moderate sun exposure might help you combat the symptoms. If you suffer from SAD during the winter, you can combat the feelings with the help of natural light. Look for ways to introduce more sunlight into your environment, with the help of Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs).

Better relationships: More sunlight can help your relationships because it offers a mood enhancement.

Improve visibility: Natural light makes things easier to see and provides true color rendition to your décor and wardrobe.

Daylighting is the most cost-effective and beneficial way to light up any interior space while keeping the lights turned off during the day. Daylighting systems (i.e. windows, skylights, Tubular Daylight Devices, etc.) are not only eco-friendly, but they provide exceptional and beautiful lighting.

National Daylight Appreciation Day is sponsored by Solatube International Inc, the leading manufacturer and marketer of Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs).  Since 1991, enough Solatube products have been installed to offset more than 68,590,000 pounds of carbon emissions annually, the equivalent of eliminating all carbon emissions for the entire country of Kuwait for one full day. The company recently launched its Smart LED System, which is a fusion of daylighting and LED lighting that saves up to 94 percent on lighting energy use.

In Honor of National Daylight Appreciation Day Let’s Play Some Trivia!

National Daylight Appreciation Day is today, June 21st, and in honor of the longest day to receive sunlight we thought it would be a good idea to get some competition going and start up a contest!

Every week for the next 4 weeks we will be asking a trivia question related to daylight and if you submit your answer and it is right, you will have a chance to win a DIY Tubular Daylighting Device. It is a pretty big deal so we suggest getting your answers in immediately(after you enjoy this long day of course)!

The first question to start off the competition is…

What prehistoric monument is most commonly associated with the winter and summer solstices and has been for about 5,000 years?

Please send your answers to Solatubeinternational@gmail.com for your chance to win the prize!

Please Note: You must live in the United States to participate in this contest.

National Daylight Appreciation Day (June 21, 2012) was created as a way to increase awareness about benefits and innovative uses of daylight in our everyday lives. It is also a day of education and awareness, leading us toward a more energy-efficient planet. We hope to shed light on sustainable practices on National Daylight Appreciation Day and throughout the year and encourage everyone to use more daylight at home and work and keep the lights turned off.

The evidence of the power of the sun is everywhere. It keeps our solar system together, provides warmth for all living things to grow and gives us beautiful light to see the wonders of the earth.  Without it we would not exist.  It would be easy to forget, in all of the sun’s majesty, that it not only provides important benefits for the earth, but for the people who live here as well.

Five health benefits of the sun: Daylight…

  1. increases individual productivity and intellectual capacity.
  2. affects our health. It makes us feel and look better.
  3. boosts the immune system.
  4. lowers cholesterol. Lower your cholesterol naturally by getting sensible sun exposure.
  5. reduces stress, anxiety and depression.

These are only a few of the many benefits for each of us the sun provides.  Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the extra hours of daylight on June 21, 2012.  Spend some quality time with the sun.  Your body will thank you for it.

Besides basking in the sun outdoors, we may also be grateful for the wonderful benefits of daylighting. Daylighting is the most cost-effective and beneficial way to light up any interior space without having to use electrical lighting, thus keeping the lights turned off during the day.

Daylighting systems (i.e. windows, skylights, Tubular Daylight Devices, etc.)  are not only eco-friendly, but they provide exceptional and beautiful lighting.  By using a renewable resource, daylighting systems are able to harness the sun’s rays and help build a sustainable future.

June 21 will be a day devoted to the sun and the many benefits of daylighting.

What is daylighting, you ask?

This term refers to the use of natural light to brighten an interior space, as opposed to electric lighting. Not only will it reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint, but studies have proven that daylighting can enhance mental and physical well-being, as well as boost concentration and energy levels.

How will you celebrate Daylight Appreciation Day?

National Daylight Appreciation Day Celebrates the Joy of Daylight on the Longest Day of the Year, June 21

Benefits of Daylight are Myriad, as Well as Energy Efficient

The appreciation of daylight goes back practically as far as the history of humankind. The ancients relied on it to tell time, using sundials. Great monuments such as the pyramids in Egypt and Stonehenge in England have significant ties to daylight. The Druids created festivals to celebrate it, such as Summer Solstice.

In modern times, we have gotten away from the joy and benefits of daylight by boxing ourselves in at home and work, often cutting ourselves off from this vital source of energy.
National Daylight Appreciation Day (June 21, 2011) was created as a way to increase awareness about benefits and innovation uses of daylight in our everyday lives. It is also a day of education and awareness, leading toward a more energy-efficient planet.
